Formed in New Delhi, Peter Cat Recording Co. is a group that’s mutated over time, shedding members and accruing more, continuously evolving musically with each album. From gypsy jazz to psychedelic cabaret, ballroom waltzes to epic space disco and bossa supernova to uneasy listening, Peter Cat Recording Co. has a remarkable range as they channel “Delhi’s noisy hum into a sound all their own” (Stereogum).
The cast of creators behind this diverse musical outfit have an unwavering vision to challenge the idea of what music from India can and should be. Comprising of founder Suryakant Sawhney on guitars/vocals, Karan Singh on drums, Dhruv Bhola on bass/samples, Rohit Gupta on keys/trumpet and Kartik Sundareshan on guitars/trumpet, the story of Peter Cat Recording Co. has unfolded across more than ten years and multiple continents.
In broadening their listener base to North America and Europe, Peter Cat Recording Co. have curated a reference point to both Indian and international fans alike, with huge tracks ‘Memory Box’ and ‘Floated By’ that showcase the band’s incredibly unique sound garnering acclaim and resonating with fans from around the world. Releasing their debut album Portrait of a Time:2010-2016 in 2018, the group followed up with critically acclaimed project Bismillah, well and truly putting them on the world stage.
“A stunning mix of bossa nova, gypsy jazz and psychedelia, as if sung by Dean Martin … smoother than a pint of butter while injected with a good sense of groove and fun.” – Clash
“All of Bismillah sparkles with this easy confidence…” – Stereogum
“There’s a lot to marvel at on any Peter Cat Recording Co. album: the crooner vocals, the gorgeous ornate instrumentation, the infectious choruses. But, on their latest album ‘Bismillah’, the keyword is fluidity. It may well be a seminal album to look back on in a decade’s time. PCRC have made an essential mark.” – ★★★★ NME
Touring extensively in 2023, performing festival sets and headline shows around the world, the group will round out the year with a series of European shows before heading to Australia for the first time in 2024.
Fans and music lovers alike will not want to miss this exclusive Melbourne show next January to experience the incredible live performance of Peter Cat Recording Co.
